Happy International Women’s Day 2019!
This day has been celebrated for the last 110 years! Beginning within the labor movement, this holiday is celebrated around the world to acknowledge the achievements of women without divisions such as national origin, race, language, or politics. Since 1977, the UN has used International Women’s Day to highlight disparities in the lives of women all over the world, and work towards global gender equality.
Did you know that New Country Day Camp has an all-female year-round staff? Well today at the 14Y we’re celebrating them and their achievements! In honor of this important day I felt it only right to share my own experience working with this fabulous team.
My name is Olana, and I am a Project Manager for summer 2019. Lilianna, our director, and I met at camp in 1998. We grew up there as campers and returned in our adolescents to work. I think I speak for both of us when I say our professional lives began at New Country. When we began as employees, we worked under not one, but two female directors, and have since seen two more! Before it was en vogue, New Country has highlighted female leadership and shown young women that those roles are for them! New Country isn’t the only time I have worked with a powerful female staff (shout out to the #powerbabes at AJ+, San Francisco), but New Country Day Camp is unique in that the leadership is female.
It’s an environment like no other because we all have this shared female experience. We treat each other with a different level of respect and consideration I haven’t felt elsewhere. We encourage self-care while discouraging self-doubt. We foster collaboration, and it never feels like I can’t ask for help. I am grateful to be part of this team, and I encourage anyone reading to seek out their girlfriends—the women in their lives—and lift them up today. We deserve it!
