Please join us for the world premiere of this exciting new take on one of the most important Yiddish films.

This event is sponsored by a Humanities New York Action Grant and presented by 14Y and Yiddish New York with promotional support from YIVO and COJECO.

About the film
Jewish Luck, one of the most important Soviet Yiddish films, is based on Sholem Aleichem’s series of ironically comic stories featuring the character Menakhem Mendl – a daydreaming entrepreneur who specializes in doomed strike-it-rich schemes. The film’s creative team included a who’s who of the Soviet Jewish arts scene at the time, with celebrated author Isaac Babel writing idiomatically sardonic intertitles. Both of the film’s lead actor Solomon (Shloyme) Mikhoels and director Alexey Granovsky were key members of the GOSET, the sensationally modernist Soviet Yiddish Theater company, and widely considered one of the best theaters in the Soviet Union. Lastly, it has been speculated that the cinematography by Eduard Tissé in fact inspired the filming of certain scenes in one of his later projects, Sergei Eisenstein’s epic and groundbreaking The Battleship Potemkin.
