LABAlive II: Sweet Taboos

After a year diving into the mysteries and power of TABOO, our LABA artists will present new work over the course of three exciting nights featuring music, literature, movement, theater, new media, and more…intertwined with classical Jewish teachings, followed by celebratory receptions.

Come take a bite of this forbidden fruit!

Two Pieces
Danielle Alhassid | Stop Motion, Performance
A performance and installation inspired by “My Hands,” a poem by Celia Dropkin, which investigates the experience of NYC through the body and sexual desire in a tongue foreign to the city—Yiddish.

KHIRUR
Layla Klinger & Sa’ar Rose | Lace, Performance
Live performance mixing experimental lace, electronic light, and analog sound as an exploration of desire and trauma in queer bodies.

Blood lines, fold lines, broken lines
Jenny Pommiss | Dance, Film
A new dance piece that traces blood lines and fault lines back to 1956 Brooklyn – a time when the artist’s grandfather drafted patterns in the garment district, her great grandmother sewed dresses with no patterns at all, and her mother kept a diary without ever skipping a day.

Feast of the Seven Sinners
Mikhl Yashinsky & Mamaliga | Yiddish Musical Drama
Excerpts from a new stage piece laying bare the seedy underground of 19th-century Vilna, its reckless youths, charity collectors and jewel thieves, saints and sinners, whores and horas. Book and lyrics by Yashinsky, music by klezmer band Mamaliga.
